Methanol (methyl alcohol, wood alcohol, carbinol, methylhydrate, methyl hydroxide) is CH3OH, a colorless poisonous liquid, a contaminant. It is the 1st, simplest representative of the homologous series of monatomic alcohols.

Methanol is used in the gas industry to combat the formation of hydrates (due to low pour point and good solubility). In organic synthesis, methanol is used to produce formaldehyde, formalin, acetic acid and a number of esters (e.g. MTBE and DME), isoprene etc.
